Instagram comment to DM not working: why and how to fix it

Title card: Instagram comment to DM not working, why and how to fix it, with a comment that got no DM and a checklist

You posted the reel, wrote "Comment GUIDE and I'll send it to you", people commented, and nothing arrived. Or the first DM arrived and the rest of the flow went missing. Both happen to almost everyone once, and in nearly every case the cause is one of a short list.

This guide goes through that list in the order worth checking. The reasons are the same whichever tool you use, because most of them are Instagram's rules, not the tool's. Where Chat33 behaves a particular way, it says so.

Start here: the 30-second check

Before going through the list, look at what the automation recorded. In Chat33, open Activity: every comment that matched a keyword shows up there, with the messages sent, and, when a run was skipped or a message failed, the reason in plain words. If the comment is not there at all, the problem is before the flow (reasons 1 to 5). If it is there with a failure, the problem is in the flow or in Instagram's delivery rules (reasons 6 to 10).

1. You tested it by commenting from your own account

This is the most common one. A comment-to-DM flow answers other people. Your account commenting on its own post is ignored, because a business cannot send itself a DM, and replying to yourself would be noise in the thread.

Fix: test from a second account, or ask a friend to comment.

2. The account is not a professional account, or the connection needs renewing

Comment automation only works through Meta's official API, and that API only works for business and creator accounts. A personal account cannot be connected at all. If you switched account types, or changed your password, or removed the app in Instagram's settings, the connection may need to be renewed.

Fix: check that the account is professional (business vs creator account explains the difference, both work), then open Channels and reconnect the account if it asks you to.

3. The flow is not live

A flow that is saved but not switched on does not run. Neither does a paused one. This catches people who build the flow, test the preview, and forget the last step.

Fix: open the flow and check that it is switched on, not saved as a draft or paused.

A comment trigger can listen on all your posts or only on the ones you picked. If you picked posts and the comment is on a different one, including a new reel you published after setting up the flow, nothing happens. That is the point of the setting, but it is easy to forget.

Fix: open the trigger and add the post, or switch it to all posts if every post should answer the keyword.

5. The keyword did not match the comment

Keyword matching in Chat33 ignores capitals, punctuation and accents, and looks for the keyword as whole words anywhere in the comment. So:

KeywordCommentStarts the flow?
GUIDE"guide please!"Yes
GUIDE"GUIDE 馃檹"Yes
GUIDE"send me the guidebook"No, "guidebook" is a different word
PRICE LIST"price list?"Yes
PRICE LIST"what's the price"No, both words must appear, in order

People also misspell the word, or write it in another language. If the comment in front of you looks right to a human but did not start the flow, paste both into the free comment keyword tester: it runs the same matching rules and shows the comment word by word.

Fix: pick a keyword that is short, distinctive and hard to misspell (20 comment keyword examples by industry has ideas), and add the common variants as extra keywords on the same flow.

6. Only the first message arrived

This is not a bug, it is Instagram's main rule for comments. A comment allows one private reply, in plain text. The person has not written to you yet, so there is no open conversation, and any further message the flow sends right after the first one is not delivered. Chat33 records those as failed in Activity, so you can see exactly where it stopped.

Fix: put the link or the freebie in the first message, end it with a question ("Reply START and I'll send the next step"), and put everything after that in a separate DM keyword flow that answers the reply. How comment-to-DM works walks through that structure, and the Instagram 24-hour messaging window explains the rule underneath it.

7. The buttons disappeared

Buttons, carousels and images cannot be sent as the private reply to a comment. If the first message of a comment flow has buttons, Chat33 writes link buttons into the text as plain links and drops reply buttons, so the message still goes out. If your flow relied on someone tapping a button in that first message, the tap never comes.

Fix: write the first message as text with the link in it. Use buttons in the flow that answers their reply, where they work. Instagram quick replies and buttons covers what each message type can do.

8. That person already got the DM on this post

A comment flow sends its DM once per person per post. If someone comments the keyword three times, they get one DM, not three. This stops a flow from spamming one person, and it also means re-commenting from the same test account does not send it again.

Fix: test with a fresh account, or on a different post.

9. The person opted out, or you hit your contact limit

If the person replied STOP to an earlier message and opt-out is switched on for the channel, they do not get automated messages any more, including comment replies. And every plan includes a number of active contacts per month: when a free account reaches its limit, new people stop getting automated DMs until the next month or an upgrade. Both show up in Activity with that reason.

Fix: for opt-outs, nothing to fix, that is the person's choice. For the limit, check your usage in Settings.

10. The comment came before the flow was on, or the DM is in Requests

Automation answers comments as they arrive. Comments written before you switched the flow on were never sent to it. In Chat33 you can send the same DM to matching comments from the last 7 days with Send to earlier comments on the trigger; older comments cannot get a private reply any more, because Meta only allows it for a limited time after the comment.

And sometimes the DM did arrive, just not where the person looked. If they do not follow you, Instagram can put the message in their message requests instead of the main inbox.

Fix: switch the flow on before you publish the post. In the public reply, say where the DM went: "Sent! Check your DMs, and your message requests if you don't follow us yet." What to write as a public comment reply has more examples.

A checklist to run before every campaign post

  1. Account is business or creator, and connected without warnings.
  2. Flow is switched on.
  3. Trigger is on all posts, or on this exact post.
  4. Keyword is distinctive, with common variants added.
  5. First message is plain text, with the link in it.
  6. First message asks for a one-word reply, and a DM keyword flow answers that word.
  7. A public reply tells people to check their DMs and requests.
  8. Tested from a second account.

Most of these are the same habits as in the most common DM automation mistakes. Running the list takes two minutes and saves the post.

Instagram comment-to-DM in Chat33

Keyword triggers per post, one complete private reply on the official Instagram API, public replies, and an Activity feed that says why a run was skipped.

FAQ

Why did my Instagram auto DM only send the first message?

Because a comment only allows one private reply. Later messages in the same flow are sent before the person has replied, so Instagram does not deliver them. Put everything important in the first message and continue in a separate flow once they answer.

Why doesn't comment-to-DM work when I test it myself?

Comments from the account that owns the post are ignored. Test from a second account.

Can I send the DM to people who commented before I set up the automation?

In Chat33, yes, for comments from the last 7 days, with Send to earlier comments on the trigger. Older comments cannot get a private reply any more.

Why did someone who commented twice only get one DM?

A comment flow sends one DM per person per post, so repeated comments from the same person do not trigger it again.

Is my account at risk if comment-to-DM fails?

A failed delivery is not a violation. What puts accounts at risk is tools that log in with your password or message people who never wrote to you. Is Instagram DM automation safe? explains the difference.
