How to make sales on Instagram: turn comments into customers

A Chat33 user recently asked our support chat a very direct question: "How can you help me make sales?"
It's the right question, and the honest answer has two parts. No tool can make people want what you sell. What a tool can do is stop you from losing the people who already want it, and on Instagram that's where most sales disappear.
This guide shows how to make sales on Instagram with comments and DMs: why the usual path loses buyers, how the method works, copy-paste setups for five kinds of business, the math to expect, and the rules that decide whether it works at all.
In short:
- Instagram sales are usually lost between "I want this" and the product page, not because of the post.
- Ask people to comment a keyword. They get a private DM with the exact link in seconds.
- Put the answer and the link in that first DM, then end with one easy question.
- Automation starts the conversation. A person closes the bigger sales.
- You don't need many followers. You need a clear offer and people who ask about it.
Where Instagram sales actually get lost
Instagram captions can't hold clickable links. So someone who sees your product and wants it has to stop watching, open your profile, tap the link, get past a link page, and find the right item. A notification, a message or the next reel can pull them away at any of those steps.
Then there's the other way sales die: the questions. Someone comments "how much?" at 11pm. You see it the next morning, reply, and they've moved on. Multiply that by every post, and you've lost sales you never knew you had.
Both problems have the same fix: answer the moment someone shows interest, and bring the link to them.
How comment-to-DM makes sales
Comment-to-DM is an automation built on Meta's official API. It works in four steps:
- You ask for one word. Your caption says, for example, "Comment PRICE and I'll send you the details."
- Someone comments it. They've just told you they're interested, publicly and by choice.
- They get a private DM. In Chat33's recent logs, the typical DM went out about 4 seconds after the comment. It holds the answer and the exact product link.
- The conversation can start. If they reply, the chat opens and you can help them decide, recommend an option, and close the sale.
This works while you sleep, and that matters more than it sounds. The person gets the link while they're still interested, not nine hours later.
For the full setup, including triggers and public replies, see the comment-to-DM guide. If you're not sure the DM route beats your bio, link in bio vs DM links compares them.
Instagram comment-to-DM on the official APIKeyword triggers per post, the link in the first DM, and click tracking on every flow.
Five setups you can copy
The method stays the same, but what you send changes with what you sell. Replace the words and links with your own.
Physical products
The goal is the shortest path to one product page. Asking about the size or color gives people an easy reason to reply.
Caption: The washed linen shirt is back in 4 colors. Comment PRICE and I'll DM you the details.
Trigger: Comment keyword "PRICE", on this post only
First DM: Hey! The linen shirt is $48, with sizes S to XL in stock.
Here it is: https://yourshop.com/linen-shirt
Which color are you thinking of?

More keywords and a launch plan are in comment-to-DM for online stores.
Services and bookings
Salons, trainers, clinics and tradespeople sell time. Send the booking link and ask one question that makes the next step easy.
Caption: Two balayage slots left this week. Comment BOOK and I'll send you the calendar.
Trigger: Comment keyword "BOOK", on this post only
First DM: Here's the calendar with this week's open times: https://yoursalon.com/book
Is this your first balayage, or a touch-up?

Coaching and high-ticket offers
Nobody buys a $2,000 program from a DM link. The sale here is the call, and the DM's job is to qualify the person and get them to book it.
Caption: I wrote down how my clients get their first 5 paying customers. Comment PLAN for it.
Trigger: Comment keyword "PLAN"
First DM: Here's the plan: https://yoursite.com/first-5-customers
If you'd like help applying it, you can book a free call here: https://yoursite.com/call
What are you selling right now?
Tag: plan-first-5
Read the reply yourself. The answer tells you whether this person is a fit. Comment-to-DM for coaches goes further.
Digital products
Templates, ebooks and courses are the easiest fit: there's no stock to check, and the buyer can pay and get the product right away. A free sample often sells better than a direct pitch.
Caption: Here are 3 of my 40 Notion templates. Comment TEMPLATE and I'll send them free.
Trigger: Comment keyword "TEMPLATE"
First DM: Here are your 3 free templates: https://yoursite.com/free
The full pack of 40 is here if you want it: https://yoursite.com/pack
What will you use them for first?

Not ready to buy? Collect the email
Plenty of people like your offer but won't buy today, and you can't message them on Instagram weeks later. An email address solves that. A Collect email step asks for it in the first DM and waits up to 24 hours for the reply. Then you send what you promised, and the address can go straight to your email tool, such as Mailchimp.
Caption: Doors open next month. Comment EARLY for the waitlist and the early price.
Trigger: Comment keyword "EARLY"
Question: You're almost on the list. What's your email? You'll hear from me first when doors open.
Got it: Done, you're on the list. What do you most want to learn?

Your first selling flow, step by step
You can have this running on your next post. Start small.
- Check your account. You need an Instagram professional account, either business or creator. A Facebook Page works too.
- Pick one offer. Choose the product people already ask about. Don't try to automate your whole catalog on day one.
- Pick one keyword. Use one short, ordinary word, like
PRICE,LINKorBOOK. Matching is by whole word, soSIZEwon't match "oversized". Keyword examples by industry has more, and our free keyword tester shows what a keyword would catch. - Write the first DM. Give the answer, then the link, then one easy question. The 2-part sales DM has eight templates.
- Add a public reply. A short "Sent, check your DMs" tells the person to look, and shows everyone else that commenting works.
- Add a tag. Tag contacts with the keyword, so you know who asked about what.
- Ask for the word in your post. Put the instruction in the first line of the caption and say it in the video. These caption formulas help.
- Test it from another account. Comment the keyword yourself before you rely on it. If nothing arrives, this checklist covers the usual causes.
Already have a post that's getting comments? Chat33's "Send to earlier comments" option sends the same DM to matching comments from the last 7 days, including ones from before the flow was on, and skips anyone who already got a DM on that post.
How many sales should you expect?
Be careful with anyone who promises a number, including vendors in this space. We don't publish a conversion benchmark, because your result depends on your audience, your offer, your price and your page. Measure your own instead.
You can still do the math. Here's a made-up example, with numbers chosen only to show how it works:
| Step | Example | What it depends on |
|---|---|---|
| Keyword comments on a post | 40 | The post, the offer, the keyword |
| DMs sent | 40 | Your setup |
| People who click the link | 20 | The DM and how clear the link is |
| Orders | 2 | Your product page, price and trust |
| Revenue at $48 each | $96 |
Now run your own numbers. Say the clicks are fine but nobody buys. Then the problem is the page, so stop rewriting the DM. Say the comments are low. Then the problem is the post or the offer, and no automation will fix that. How to measure comment-to-DM shows what to fix at each step.
To connect sales to a post, give each flow's link its own tracking tag, or use a separate discount code per flow. Chat33 shows triggers, messages sent and link clicks for each flow, while the revenue number comes from your shop or payment tool.
Do you need a lot of followers?
No. This method only needs people who care about what you sell, and a small account can have plenty of those. Five comments a day from people asking for your price are worth more than 5,000 likes from people who'd never buy.
Small accounts have one real advantage here: you can personally read every reply. Use that time well, because what people ask will teach you how to sell to the next person.
What you do need is a clear offer. If people don't know what you sell or what it costs, no keyword will help. Fix that first.
The rules that decide whether it works
These come from Meta, and every tool on the official API has to follow them. This is where most selling flows go wrong.
- A comment allows one private reply. Until the person writes back, your first DM is the only message that reaches them. So the link goes in the first DM. A first message that says "Want the link? Reply YES" and saves the link for later means most people never get it.
- After they reply, you get a 24-hour window. Their message opens it, and you can send them messages until it closes. After that you have to wait for them to write again.
- No cold messages. You can't message your followers as a list, or people who only liked a post. The person has to act first. That's a limit, but it's also why the people you do reach actually care.
- Don't blast every comment. Use a keyword, so "love this" doesn't get a sales message. People who asked for the link are happy to get it. People who didn't may report you.
Unofficial tools that log into your account can break these limits, and they can get the account restricted. Is Instagram DM automation safe? explains the difference, and the automation rules guide covers the details.
The follow-up is where bigger sales close
Automation gets the link out and opens the door, but it can't read the room. When someone replies "is this OK for sensitive skin?" or "can I pay in two parts?", that's a buyer, and they should get a person.
Three habits make the difference:
- Answer replies quickly, while the 24-hour window is open and the person still remembers you.
- Handle price directly. "Too expensive" often means "I'm not sure yet". This guide to price objections has replies you can use.
- Follow up once, and offer something useful. A size tip or a customer photo works much better than "still interested?". These six templates show how.
What Chat33 does, and what it doesn't
You should know this before you sign up.
| Chat33 does | Chat33 doesn't |
|---|---|
| Sends the DM when someone comments a keyword, on Instagram and Facebook | Write your offer or make people want it |
| Answers DM keywords and Instagram story replies | Take payments inside the DM: the link goes to your own shop or checkout |
| Collects emails in the chat and sends them to your email tool | Show revenue per flow: it counts triggers, messages and clicks |
| Tracks link clicks for each flow | Message people who never contacted you |
| Schedules your posts across your social accounts in one calendar | Close the sale in the conversation: that's a person's job |
The Free plan includes 100 active contacts a month, 3 flows and 3 channels, with link tracking. That's enough to test all of this on a real post before you pay anything. See what each plan includes.
Two more ways to earn with Chat33
Selling your own product is the main use, but if you don't have one yet, there are two other options:
- Paid creator campaigns. Brands pay creators to post short videos, and your earnings follow your views. You can browse live creator campaigns and see the pay and rules before you apply.
- The affiliate program. If you teach people how to sell online, you can earn 30% recurring on the subscriptions of the workspaces you refer.
FAQ
How do I start selling on Instagram with no followers?
Start with one clear offer and post content that answers questions your buyers already have. Ask viewers to comment a keyword, and send the link by DM. You need a professional account, but there's no follower minimum for comment-to-DM. With few followers, reach comes from Reels and from answering everyone who shows interest.
Is it better to sell through DMs or link in bio?
Use both. Your bio link suits people who already know you and visit your profile on purpose. A DM link works better for a specific product in a specific post, because it takes the person straight to that product and stays in their inbox.
Can I take payment directly in an Instagram DM?
Not with Chat33. The DM carries a link to your own shop, booking page or checkout, and the payment happens there.
Will automated DMs get my account banned?
Replying to people who commented or messaged you, through Meta's official API, is within the rules. The risky tools are the ones that log in with your password or message people who never contacted you.
How do I know which post made the sale?
Give each flow's link its own tracking tag, or use a different discount code per flow, then check your shop or payment tool. Chat33 shows clicks per flow, and your shop shows the sale.
Does this work on Facebook too?
Yes. A comment keyword on a Facebook Page post can send a private message with the link, and Messenger keywords work as well. See Facebook Messenger automation. The one current exception is the Collect email step, which can't run as the first reply to a Facebook comment.
The short version
To make sales on Instagram, close the gap between "I want this" and the product page. Ask for a keyword, send the answer and the exact link in the first DM, end with one easy question, and have a person handle the replies. Start with one offer on your next post, then check where people drop off and fix that one step.
